If you talk to a bunch of people about their New Years resolutions, theres a good chance that most of them will tell you that they want to lose weight or get into shape this year. Why is it that many Western countries are continuing to get bigger than ever, regardless of our obsession with diet and exercise and the many different diet plans available?
Often its because humans like to see results quickly. Were not patient, and for many of us we find that losing weight is all about restriction and feelings of hunger, so when we dont see instant results on the scale we quickly become a little depressed and fall right off that diet train and into binge city.
So whats the answer? While theres no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss and getting into shape, there are a few things you can do to make the process more fun, get better results and meet your goals.
Here are some tips for losing weight and getting fit this year:
Track your food
Have you ever heard the saying abs are made in the kitchen and not in the gym? Well its true. You also have an ideal amount of calories that you should be eating each day, and this will depend on your age, weight and how active you are. Within these calories you should aim to eat high protein, moderate fat (good fats) and low carb. There are many ways that you can track your food, whether you want to write it down in a food diary or use an app like My Fitness Pal which will also keep track of your macros.
Get enough protein
Protein will fill you up and help you build muscle, and you may find that its hard to get all of your protein calories in each day. thats why you may want to choose a protein shake that you can use after the gym or even as a meal replacement. Take some time to figure out the for your needs, and try to get as much protein as possible from whole foods as well.
While working out is a relatively small part of getting your ideal beach body, it also shouldnt be overlooked. In fact, along with helping you get healthier and fitter, youll learn and since muscle burns more calories at rest than fat does, youll also find that it helps accelerate your progress.
If you want to build muscle, youll need to focus on lifting heavy weights frequently in order to make your muscles grow. However if youre simply aiming to slim down and get fitter, go for runs or spend some time doing cardio when youre at the gym.
Ideally, you should aim for a nice mix of cardio and strength training throughout the week, along with a well-balanced diet for the best results.
