Moving country can be a hard and challenging experience but it can also be an extremely worthwhile adventure. However, you rarely hear people talk about the hours of admin and days of preparation; instead they make it look so effortless (thanks to social media boasting).
In reality, however, it is far from easy. Thats why I have written a few tips below, to help you keep your sanity while you plan your great new adventure abroad.
Research
This is really important. Before you go anywhere, always research the country you are going to first. Know their currency, climate, language and culture. If you have the time and the money, a visit to the country is always a good idea, to familiarise yourself with your new home.
Make sure to research what residency papers, visas and potential immunizations you may need if necessary. Also know what is needed from you in order to set up a bank account.
Packing
Try to keep packing to a minimum. It is hard letting go of your possessions, but you will want to consider the cost of moving them to a new country. Make a list of items that are easily replaceable on the other side.
Go through all your belongings before you pack, sell items for extra cash on eBay or Gumtree. Give surplus items to family and friends or to charities in your local area. Just remember the kitchen sink can stay at home.
Save your money
Its important to know how much money you will need. The last thing you want to do is run out of money in a new strange place. Make sure to have at least 3 6 months living expenses saved up before you go.
Shipping
If you are bringing large items with you, for example, a sofa, you will require professional help. You can get plenty of free quotes online by using websites like Shiply. This crafty website matches you with transporters who are already making similar trips which allow you to save up to 75% standard rates.
One major important element to think about here is the cost. Is it cheaper to buy new items abroad, then it is to transport them? If the answer is no, then find yourself an affordable and reliable courier online.
Good Luck
Moving country is what you make of it. Dont forget to enjoy it and soak up all the new cultures, places and people you will encounter on the way.
