Where To Holiday In 2016

The New Year is most definitely upon us, and now that weve definitely shaken off the hangover from Christmas and New Year celebrations, its time to really embrace 2016. One of my favourite things to do at the start of a new year is make plans to travel and have a new, exciting adventure. Whether you go alone, with friends, on a romantic couple’s retreat, or are planning your family holiday for 2016 – theres plenty to do and visit this year, so make it count. Here are Wexas‘s recommendations for the top travel destinations for 2016.

Ghent, Belgium

Tipped as one of the best destinations for foodies this year, Ghent is usually famous for its incredible Christmas markets. However, it seems that now the Christmas festivities have been packed away, the chefs of Ghent are just getting started. This University town is home to lots of stunning medieval-era cathedrals and churches waiting to be explored, while the cobbled streets of Patershol are filled with cute, local restaurants and cafes, popular with students for delicious, hearty meals at relatively low prices.

Borneo, Malaysia/Indonesia/Brunei

Nature lovers and adrenaline junkies alike will fall in love with Borneo, an island state shared by Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. The Sabah coastline is full of tiny, gorgeous islands perfect for sunbathing and swimming; while hardier travellers can try their hands (or rather, feet) at climbing Mount Kinabalu, Malaysias highest peak. Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary to catch a glimpse of endangered baby orangutans in their natural habitats, or enjoy a scenic tour on the North Borneo steam railway.

Sicily, Italy

Foodies and lovers of wine will be very happy indeed in Sicily, with vineyards a-plenty to visit and plenty of local delicacies to sample. It serves as a well-deserved rest between soaking up some history and stunning ocean views at the ruined Greek Amphitheatre, or gazing at the gorgeous Baroque architecture in Modica, including the Chiesa di San Giorgio – be sure to climb the stairs up to the camera obscura for the best view. Dont leave without getting a jeep tour of the magnificent volcano Mount Etna and catching a sight of the stunning lava formations.

Washington D.C, USA

With the US Presidential Elections underway this year, theres no better time to visit the US capital city of Washington DC. Brush up on your US History with a visit to George Washingtons manor, the Lincoln Memorial, Veterans memorial, the national mall, and of course the Smithsonian. Dont forget to snap a selfie outside the White House and Capitol – the homes of American politics. This year the National Museum of African American History opens in the centre of the city, the first museum exclusively devoted to African American representation in the world – so be sure to visit this incredible landmark.
