What you should know before you purchase a motorbike

Considering making 2017 the year you finally trade in your Honda for a Harley? Awesome! You probably already know that there are plenty of reasons why you should make the change, but there are also a few things you should know before you get too excited about your new ride.

Here are some things to consider before you purchase a motorbike:pexels-photo-108097

The costs

Many people assume that the only thing theyll need to pay for is the bike itself, but this couldnt be more wrong. In fact, while youre likely to enjoy much cheaper gas costs, youre still likely to be underestimating the amount youll spend while making the switch.

One thing that many people forget about is the required safety gear. And this is a big problem as that gear may be the difference between you wrecking your bike, and ruining your body. At the very least, youll need a good helmet, a motorcycle jacket, and some sturdy shoes (motorcycle boots are the best).

One good thing about choosing a bike over a car, is youll be able to find a number of parts online, such as Yamaha accessories. Youll also find a wealth of information about motorcycle upgrades, meaning maintenance costs are likely to be lower than expected.

Your experience

Before purchasing your first motorbike, its important to consider your level of experience. Obviously, if youve been riding motorbikes all your life, youre likely to be able to handle a bike with a bit more power than someone who is a newbie. Sure, you may feel a bit lame if you get an entry level bike, but since the majority of new riders are likely to crash within the first six months, your wallet (and body) will thank you.

Once you have some training and experience, youll be able to upgrade to a better bike. Just remember, if youre unsure about what youre doing, figuring it out isnt an option- take the time to get some lessons, and youll learn valuable skills that will keep you safe on your bike.

The Benefits

There are so many reasons why you should get a motorbike. Along with being better for the environment (and better for your wallet in the long run), youll find that you simply enjoy your daily commute. Youll meet people from all walks of life who also happen to love bikes, and youll make a whole new group of friends who can help you learn the ropes as you embark on an exciting new adventure.

This is particularly true for female riders, with surveys showing that women who ride a motorbike are more confident and happier compared to those who drive a car, and also report having better relationships- that sounds like a win/win.

If youre considering purchasing a motorbike, do some research, take some lessons, meet some new people, and enjoy the whole process. You wont regret it.
